WC Report from Walt Ghio

The 1995 Free Flight World Championships started for me with a phone call in January from Robert Waterman, who was then the team manager. He had to step down from the position due to his work and asked if I could replace him. After a week of reviewing my own workload, I agreed to take on the job of team manager.

From my past experience as team manager I was able to organize the collection of team funds from donations and the sales of supporter T-shirts for our team uniforms, food, batteries, and other items needed at the World Champs. I would like to thank those who made donations to the team and also the people who purchased a team supporter T-shirt or hat. A special thank you to: Max Men Club, FAI Supply, Starline International, Magnificent Mountain Men Club, Southern California Aero Team, Detroit Balsa Bugs, Chicago Aerosports, Bob White, Roger Murrell, Steve Geraghty, Ralph Connery, Sal Talibi, Jim Walston, Hardy Broderson, Norm Furutani, Richard Swenson, Bruce Agustus, Bill Vanderbeek, Jim Bradley, and Ed Kick. Norm and Ellen Poti did an excellent job of selling shirts and hats at the Muncie contests. The funds were put to good use and the remainder will be given to the team fund for the 1997 team.

Also, I would like to say a big thank you to Teresa McKee at AMA for her help in organizing this team for the World Champs. With a total of 43 Americans at the World Champs, Teresa did a great job of sending in the entries and providing me with all the information.

Most of the team members were at the Max Men contest in February, so we were able to meet and talk over our plans. We scheduled a team practice the first of June. AMA informed me that they would not fund the practice as they had in the past. A big thank you to Robert Waterman, who came to our rescue and made a donation to the team for the practice at Lost Hills. This went very well and I had high hopes for the team as a whole. This was the first World Champs for five of the team members.

Travel to the World Championships went well for all the team members except Mike Achterberg. His model box did not show up at the airport, but it was located and arrived the next day. There was slight damage to several components, but they were repaired with no problems.

The main problem that we had was the motel that the organizers had provided for us. We were housed in several buildings with five people to a room. On Friday and Saturday night there was a band that played from 9:00 P.M. till 4:00 A.M.

After meeting with the officials, they arranged to show me and the Australian team manager eleven homes in Domsod that would replace the motel. I was responsible for the twelve team members and also twenty team supporters. After reviewing the bedrooms in each home, I housed the thirty-two Americans in eight of them. Teresa's paperwork came into use for this unexpected event. These arrangements worked out very well for us and many friends were made in Domsod. A total of thirty-five homes were being used by World Champs teams in Domsod and the surrounding area.

The officials had several problems during the World Champs. All meals were served on the field in a big tent that was set up next to the camping area. This was very dusty and hot. At first no drinks were included with the meals, but this was amended after complaints at the team managers meeting. The lunch break was scheduled for one hour long; this was changed on glider day to two hours because they could not feed the people in the time allotted. On Wakefield day you had to drive over a mile back to the tent for lunch. A simple packed lunch would have worked better for all involved.

The organization was not very good for the check-in at the start of the World Champs or during the flyoffs. All the teams had to review the names of their team members and supporters before you could proceed to the inspection area. This took over one hour for our team. The processing went very well once underway. There was much confusion during the assignment of pole positions for the flyoffs. This required a lot of time and could often be shortened with the use of a computer to pick a random pole position list.

My time was limited to work with the team due to the housing problems, but we were able to practice and prepare for the contest. The weather was on the warm side with very little wind. During the opening ceremonies it rained, and the third and fourth days were very nice with very little drift and big thermals.

A World Champs report by Jim Parker will be in Model Aviation, so I will not give a blow-by-blow account of the contest. As I had expected, the power team did not do as well as in the past, but the power team had some very good performances and the motors were among the best on the field. With Randy Archer flying on the team next to us it was a joy to hear the motors on the field and to have the chase teams working hard. I tried to thank all the team supporters that helped us during the flyoff, but if I missed you, thanks for the help.

The Glider and Wakefield teams had perfect scores up to lunch each day. The time dropped for the Glider team was due to a hook unlatching in the wind and a line crossing that damaged Andrew Barron's model. Daniel Tracy's dropped flight was during a calm period when the drift was changing direction 180 degrees. The conditions were not easy during these periods and overall the team had very good results, placing sixth for the Challenge France trophy.

After a long drive to Budapest in hot buses, the banquet was held in a large room that I was told was the Budapest metro lunch room. It was very hot and crowded, but the food was good. Each World Champion was presented with a portable computer that was donated by Compaq, the World Champs sponsor.

I want to again thank all the people that supported the team before we went to the World Champs and again at the team — the team supporters that helped as officials at the contest. Also, thanks to the Hungarian officials and private citizens that donated many items for the team. Our two interpreters, Eva and Kate, were a big help to the team. I had excellent cooperation from all the team members and my assistant team manager, Bob Isaacson. I want to thank each of you and I hope to be on a future team with you.
