Focus on Competition
Technical Director Steve Kaluf
This month I'd like to describe a great opportunity recently afforded me.
AMA Headquarters has found it very beneficial to foster a relationship with a local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter. Jay Mealy, AMA's Resource Development Director, has spearheaded this effort.
The EAA and AMA have many similar goals. One of the more important ones is the desire to spread the word about aviation (full-scale and models) to as many people as possible. This is the area where we felt the AMA and a local EAA chapter could work together best.
EAA has a program called Young Eagles. This program is designed to provide a motivational aviation experience, focusing on a demonstration flight in an airplane. These flights are provided free of charge to any youth wishing to participate. It is not unusual for a local EAA chapter to provide 200 rides in a single day. Once the kids have finished their flight, they are given a certificate commemorating their first flight, and they are sent a complimentary copy of Sport Aviation for Kids by EAA headquarters.
On two separate occasions EAA Chapter 226, Anderson Aces, provided just such an experience for kids attending AMA's annual Homecoming event. One of our goals last year was to provide the kids with not only a flight in a full-scale aircraft but also introductory flights with a radio-control and/or control-line aircraft. More than 65 kids were provided full-scale rides at the '95 event. About 200 control-line flights were given (provided through the generosity of the Muncie Controliners), and many other kids were also given the opportunity to fly a radio-control aircraft. This has proven to be a very productive program.
Now, with that background said, on to the "great opportunity." Anderson Aces invited Jay Mealy and me to participate in one of their recent project tours. This is a drive-around tour that goes to several chapter members' homes/shops to look at the aircraft they are currently working on—kind of like our "show and tell" at AMA club meetings.
We visited four different projects. To say these projects were neat to look at would be an understatement. Several things struck me as we looked at each one: these aircraft use many of the same techniques we use in aeromodeling; in some cases they even use the same materials (I saw balsa inlaid in a seaplane project, and spruce in almost all of them). These builders all have the same type of pride in their creations, and in almost every shop I found a model aircraft. In our conversations it was very apparent that most of the members had at one time built and flown model aircraft. One chapter member (building a beautiful Marquet Charger) even said that the only aircraft-building experience he had was from models.
The tour ended at the AMA National Model Aviation Museum. This was the first time an EAA chapter has met in an AMA facility. That may not sound like much at first read, but think about it: the two organizations represented at the meeting are the world's two largest sport aviation organizations. Each group has in the neighborhood of 150,000 members. We know for a fact that we share many common members. We certainly share a very common mission.
So, to the members of EAA Chapter 226, Anderson Aces, and to the EAA, we say thank you. We had a great time, and we look forward to a long, mutually beneficial relationship. To the members of the AMA: get involved with a local EAA chapter and try some joint projects with the Young Eagles program. You will have a lot of fun doing it, and aviation will benefit greatly.
On a different subject, our representatives just left for the CIAM meeting in Paris as this is being written. The agenda has lots of interesting items on it. I'll do a summary of the meeting in next month's column.
Till next time, let's go flying!
