Sad news

Frank Kieser, who was taking over publication of Indoor News & Views, has had a stroke and is partially paralyzed. Frank is now in a rehabilitation center and is doing fairly well. He would welcome cards and letters of encouragement; send them to: 2595 Whippoorwill Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

U.S. Indoor Championships (USIC)

Tony Italiano is taking a well‑earned retirement from running the NFFS‑sponsored U.S. Indoor Championships. He has served far longer than most would expect. Despite fairly high expenses, the meet has approached break‑even status. For the meet to continue after 1992, attendance must continue to grow.

The event is set for June 4–7, 1992 at the Minidome, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee. The new CD will be Chuck Slusarczyk, and he will need both helpers and contestants. This is a make‑or‑break situation: expenses are high and a lot of contestants are needed to raise enough money to keep the event running. You now have plenty of advance notice.

Contact Chuck Slusarczyk at: 4200 Royalton Rd., Brecksville, OH 44141 — tell him how you can help and volunteer for events that don't conflict with your own.

  2. Japan — 11,501

The Japanese want a rematch next year. Both teams will welcome additional regional three‑man teams. Bob Randolph (California) hopes to field a team; others interested should contact Tom Vallee: 444 Henryton St., Laurel, MD 20707 — Tel.: 301/498-0790.

1992 Living Room Stick International Postal Contest

Mike Colling has announced a repeat of the MiniStick postal meet. Details:

  • Flights to be made between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31, 1992.
  • Any number of flights may be made at any number of sites.
  • Timing must be done by someone other than the flier.
  • The best single flight wins. Times will be corrected for ceiling height (fudge factor improved based on last year's results).
  • No entry fee. U.S. entries must use airmail so entries reach Mike by Apr. 10, 1992.
  • Send SASE for a copy of results and entry information to Bud Tenny: P.O. Box 830545, Richardson, TX 75083 (for copies of rules and entry form).

Team Selection — Comments

Team Selection Finals were held Labor Day weekend at Lakehurst. The bad news: this was the smallest finals in some time and the air conditions were poor. The good news: two of the top four fliers are much younger than usual, and all team members are experienced in varying conditions.

Fourth place went to Don Slusarczyk (19), one of the country's best young fliers. Richard Doig is also much younger than many other entrants. Don and Richard have shown you don't have to be an old man to win FAI Indoor—you just have to work very hard.

MiniStick kit available

Indoor Model Supply, Box 5311, Salem, OR 97304, has announced a kit that builds three MiniStick models. Details:

  • Price: $9.95 plus $3 postage/handling.
  • Add $1 to receive the latest catalog.
  • Kit includes high‑quality wood, complete instructions, and plans.
  • Note: competitive‑weight MiniStick models are somewhat beyond a beginner project; less‑experienced builders might practice on other wood before using this kit.

Materials & Supplies — Duco cement

Duco cement appears to be disappearing from regular supply. Stan Chilton first alerted me to this, and I cannot find it locally either. If anyone has a reliable supply, please let me know.

Possible local replacements to compare with remaining Duco:

  • Duro Household Cement
  • Elmer's Household Cement
  • 3M Scotch Super Strength Adhesive (available at some True Value hardware stores)

I will be comparing these to the remains of Duco that I have.

Prop assembly

A previous column (Jan. 1992) announced Lester Garber's kit for building a prop pitch gauge. Photos show the assembled kit with a slight modification that makes prop assembly easier: two wire pins inserted into the angle piece anchor two strands of sewing thread. The thread has just enough tension to support blades while they are attached to the spar. The blade slides under the thread and rides at exactly 45 degrees.

FF Duration / Haught (continued)

Publishing is now handled by Markowski International; price is $13.95 (plus $1.05 if you wish to order direct from Don at 38 Churchill Rd., Cresskill, NJ 07626).

Ross also advises that the success of this book has led him to gather material for the next step in a possible series, dealing with topics such as construction materials, CO2, electric, gas, and compressed air, in addition to expanded sections on competition rubber models and more plans. If there are topics you'd like included, please contact the author.

Paul Clark of Watt's Up! forwarded a new product listing for electric flight components. Individual components such as motors and battery packs are listed, as well as complete flight systems which include battery pack, motor, prop, charging jack, and instructions.

Junior Free Flight Team

Chris Weinreich noted in FF Digest the financial problems facing the U.S. Junior FF Team, scheduled to compete in the 1992 World Championships in Czechoslovakia. Less than one‑third of the necessary $21,000 has been raised so far. The Free Flight community is urged to help; we cannot depend solely on corporate sponsorship.

Contributions are tax‑deductible and may be made out and sent to AMA, earmarked for the Junior FF Team Fund.
