Letters to the Editor
All letters will be carefully considered, those of general interest used. Send to Model Aviation, 815 15th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005.
Hatz Bipe
I am the designer who drew up the plans for the real Hatz Biplane. I will trade you a set of pictures for a copy of the Aug. '77 issue. I want to see how the article turned out in your magazine.
Dudley R. Kelly Route 4 Versailles, KY
The ties between model builders and home builders are great, for many of the latter are ex-modelers. Mr. Kelly sent us a set of pix of the real Hatz that would make a scale builder drool. We've reproduced a few. The Hatz is No. 195 in the Plans Service.
Good Spirit
As you may already know, the EAA Air Museum Foundation has sponsored the construction of a replica of Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis" and is now flying it around the country retracing his U.S. tour.
George Hardie Jr. Aircraft & Display Research EAA Air Museum Foundation Hales Corner, WI Mr. Hardie has already received the requested drawings. Same-size prints of the scale drawings done by Robinson, Wilson, and others, as a part of the Berliner article series, have not been offered for sale. MA is curious if readers would benefit from having these prints available—the originals vary from twice to three times the size of the drawings you see in the magazine.
Feeling Good
I don't ordinarily write letters of this sort, but I do want to let you know how much I've enjoyed and appreciate the excellent coverage in Model Aviation of recent major FF events, such as the USFF Champs, FF events at the Nats, and the FF World Championships. The narrative and photo coverages were really first-rate! Many thanks for the outstanding quality of the reportage of these events.
I also want to express appreciation for the fine plans and the variety of FF plans offered in Model Aviation. Now if we could have a payload ship and a simple competition A/1 (how about the "Tadpole" or "Grabber" going big guns out here?), things would really be rounded out in good shape.
Again, many thanks for the overall fine
Continued on page 86 quality of Model Aviation. For my money, it is the best model aviation magazine in the field.
William R. Barr AMA 31415 Claremont, CA
It is MA policy to publish all types of models, so eventually we shall get around to Mr. Barr's suggestions.
Mistaken Identity
No doubt you have received a few letters on this one already, but in the rare event that you haven't, I would like to point out that the photograph in the lower right hand corner of page 25 of the Aug. 1977 issue of Model Aviation is incorrectly captioned. The gentleman in the photo is Rick Pearson, winner of last year's Soar Nats as well as many other contests, and the sailplane that he is holding is a Paragon. Rick did an outstanding job of flying under the rather bad conditions and it would be a shame if he did not receive credit for his display of flying skill.
Since it is generally true that at least 75% of a sailplane's performance is a direct function of the pilot's skill, it would follow that mention of the sailplane used would not be significant.
I have no doubt that this was an unintentional error and know that you would want these errors called to your attention so that the proper caption can be used.
