Flight-Training Manual — 1st U.S. R/C Flight School

1st U.S. R/C Flight School, Box 212, Shawano, WI 54166; Tel.: (715) 524-2985; Web site: www.rcflightschool.com. Price: $24.95 + $4.50 S&H ($1.50 each additional).

The new Intermediate (Precision) Aerobatics flight-training manual from 1st U.S. R/C Flight School is a reference for those seeking to quickly advance their skills and serves as a guide for instructors and coaches.

The book “builds” into the sport flier’s flights the natural progression of refinements needed to take flying to a new level of accomplishment and enjoyment. With nearly half of its content addressing the proper use of rudder to prevail over wind, it will provide an immediate and significant boost for fliers whose flying skills have become stagnant.

Rather than another step-by-step rehash of maneuvers, Intermediate Aerobatics serves as a flight-training “system”—honed in more than 16 years of professional flight training at 1st U.S. R/C Flight School—using hundreds of illustrations to guide the advancing flier through practice.

Pilots will be amazed by how much easier it is to fly maneuvers while staying ahead of deviations instead of correcting them after the fact. Clubs and hobby shops will also find this book a valuable resource.

Dealer discounts are offered, and chartered-club discounts are available on quantities. For more information, contact 1st U.S. R/C Flight School.

Regal Contra Gear Box — Regal Solutions

Regal Solutions, 11 East St., Georgetown, MA 01833; Tel.: (978) 352-4834; E-mail: regal@netway.com. Price: $23.50 + S&H.

Are you tired of simulating contra-rotating propellers on rubber-powered models of designs such as the Martin-Baker MB-5 or the Macchi-Castoldi MC.72? The Regal Contra Gear Box will let you build more realistic versions of these designs, and others, with almost no additional complication.

The gearbox has transmitted the power from a single rubber motor of four strands of 1/4-inch Tan II, and that is more than enough power for 18- to 24-inch-wingspan models. The basic gearbox (less propeller blades and spines) weighs only 6 grams and is 3/4 inch square by 3/8 inch wide. The gearbox features low friction and a freewheeling option.

Air Speed Indicator (ASI) — Bob Fiorenze

Bob Fiorenze, 401 Westchester Dr., Altamonte Springs, FL 32701; Tel.: (407) 673-9080; Web site: www.rcaviation.com/fiorenze.

The Air Speed Indicator, or ASI, gives modelers real-time airspeed data in the palm of their hands. This allows for almost perfect landings every time and minimizes the chance of a stall/spin on final. This device also makes it virtually impossible to overshoot the approach because of excessive airspeed on final.

The transmitter (in the aircraft) sends airspeed information to a handheld receiver on the ground. Digital real-time airspeed is displayed on the handheld receiver (0–230 mph). The receiver (with the antenna retracted) can be placed in your shirt pocket or clipped to your belt using the optional belt clip.

Airspeed is displayed as Indicated Air Speed (IAS), not ground speed, which is proper to predict stall. Two audible airspeed alarms can be preset. The stall-speed audible alarm is progressive: it beeps slowly beginning at 20 mph higher than your preset stall speed and beeps faster as speed decreases and approaches the preset stall speed. This gives you advanced warning of an impending stall.

By pressing any button, the audible alarm can be silenced. When the speed is again raised 20 mph above the preset stall speed, the buzzer resets and will give you audible warnings again. The second alarm is a maximum (VNE) speed alarm for AMA 200 mph limit requirements; it can also be set to any speed. The airborne weight is 2 ounces. The airborne transmitter measures 2 x 1⅝ x 3/4 inches. The handheld receiver measures 4⅜ x 3¼ x 1½ inches. Range is approximately 1,000 feet. The power requirement for the transmitter is 4.8–6.0 volts, and the receiver requires a 9-volt transistor battery.

The ASI is available at local hobby shops, or order direct. Send $3 for an illustrated catalog to the address listed.

Gorilla Glue — The Gorilla Glue Company

The Gorilla Glue Company, 4550 Red Bank Expy., Cincinnati, OH 45227; Tel.: (800) 966-3458; Web site: www.gorillaglue.com.

Gorilla Glue works well when bonding dissimilar materials such as wood, metal, expanded polystyrene foam, stone, ceramic, and more. Whether you are building or repairing, Gorilla Glue is a solution to your problems.

Gorilla Glue is free of solvents and fillers, which makes it strong and versatile. It is great for indoor and outdoor use because it is 100% waterproof and unaffected by extreme temperatures, rain, or snow. It is easily paintable and stainable, and it dries a neutral color. Gorilla Glue has an open working time of 20 minutes during which the glue will remain slippery for project assembly.

For best results when using Gorilla Glue, lightly dampen one surface with water. Spread a thin layer of Gorilla Glue on the other surface. Clamp objects for three to four hours. For a complete cure, allow the glue to set for 24 hours.

For more information or to find the nearest Gorilla Glue retailer, enter your ZIP code in The Gorilla Gluefinder on the Web site or call the telephone number listed.
