PRICELESS FUN
Paul Billings
Editor's note
When the author sent us a sample of this simple flying machine, we thought, "You must be kidding!" But we've had a lot of fun flying it around our offices—it really does go!
It might be just the thing to get a newcomer started. It also works in a larger (1½-dozen) size—substitute a nickel for the penny used in the one-dozen size presented here.
For only a penny and a very few minutes of your time, you can do more for the future of our hobby, indeed the AMA itself, than any other effort that I am aware of!
A lifelong fascination with flying and things that fly is easily developed in the very young, given the proper exposure. This project is dedicated to the young, from six to 66 and on; everyone gets caught up in the fun, flying this simplest of flying machines. Here's how:
What you need
- Top from a one-dozen-size foam egg carton
- Wing pattern
- Ball-point pen
- Very sharp knife
- Penny (substitute a nickel for the larger size)
- White glue
Building and flying
- Place the wing pattern inside the styrofoam lid and trace the outline with a ball-point pen.
- Cut along the tracing with a very sharp knife.
- Press a penny down into the forward part of the "cargo bay" and secure it with a drop of white glue on either side.
- Grab it by the cargo bay and give it a good overhand toss. Have fun!
