Overview

Continuing where I left off in the August 1989 column, this article finishes the discussion of the new Kyosho Concept 30. I was very impressed with both the product and Kyosho's spare-parts and information support.

The Concept 30 is available in two variations: the DX for novices and the SE for aerobatics. The test machine I received was a ready-to-fly DX with an OS .28 FSR engine installed. My first impression on opening the kit box was very favorable because of the obvious extreme attention to detail in the design, fabrication, and packaging.

Packaging and Documentation

  • Packaging is attractive and sturdy enough to protect the machine.
  • The instruction manual is over 27 pages long and covers assembly and flying techniques.
  • The manual includes excellent configuration drawings useful for ordering parts and repairs.

Design and Features

Although the DX is the basic version, it is not stripped—this model has 18 ball races and is essentially the same machine as the SE. Key design points:

  • Pod-and-boom configuration.
  • Rotor head: an original version of the Hirobo DDF-style head.
  • Cabin: stylish, made from high-impact-resistant nylon; white with tasteful graphics (easy to repaint if desired).
  • Innovations by designer Taya:
  • Quick-release tail boom.
  • Engine installed at a 7° cant to the fore-and-aft axis to help keep the starter clear of the tail boom.
  • Use of a starting cone instead of a belt.
  • Smooth rotor-head housing that permits slowing the rotor by applying pressure with the palm of the hand.
  • DX comes standard with aluminum flybar paddles, which greatly aid hovering stability.

Assembly and Radio Installation

From the time I opened the box, it took about four hours to complete both the radio installation and helicopter assembly. Everything fit nicely, and with the well-written manual the machine literally screwed together before my eyes.

Flight Performance

Viewed from a novice's perspective, the Concept 30 DX is far less intimidating than many other machines. The assembled version and clear manual give a strong feeling of assured success.

Performance:

  • Everything tracked well on the first liftoff.
  • While the Concept is not a Legend, it is the best-performing 30-size machine I've flown.
  • With the OS .28 FSR engine, a five-channel RC system, and a gyro, the Concept 30 has enough power to serve admirably as a trainer.
  • Controls are well balanced; the head is soft enough that dual rates are not required.
  • Highly recommended for novices or those new to RC helicopters—it is a very stable, good-flying machine that will train you well.

For Advanced Flyers / Aerobatics

If you are an advanced flier or ready to do aerobatics, consider the SE version. Differences and recommended upgrades:

  • SE comes with nylon paddles and additional ball races on the pitch slider, mixing arms, and stabilizer seesaw.
  • Install an OS .32 for extra power.
  • Try a set of new weighted wood main rotor blades—extra inertia helps autorotations.

With these options you can really wind the Concept up and let it go. The DX will still perform all helicopter maneuvers.

Issues / Negatives

  • The supplied muffler blocks the low-speed adjustment on the carburetor. It's a nuisance but manageable: obtain a muffler with more clearance or grind a little off the muffler corner if you are handy.
  • The clutch in the tail bell housing is noisy and may chatter after long runs if the clutch shoes overheat. A quick spritz of oil will quiet them temporarily.

Accessories and Options

  • Kyosho now offers Hughes 500E, Jet Ranger, and Hughes 300 fuselages to convert the Concept into a semi-scale flier.
  • A new recoil hand starter is available so you can leave the electric starter at home.

Conclusion

I highly recommend the Concept 30 and look forward to the rumored 60-size version. In a future article I'll show setups to prepare your Concept for hot-dogging. For now, I think it's a great Concept.
