RADIO CONTROL: Old-Timers

Jack Bolton

BY THE TIME you read this Summer will soon arrive. With any luck you could be smearing these pages with gas and oil (purist) or castor oil (non-purist) smudges from the day's relaxed RC-Assist flying session. That's relaxed if you are not a competitive flier.

You relaxed types probably spend your flying time lazily cruising up to altitude to enjoy the beauty of the Old-Timer in controlled flight overhead and, hopefully, to hook a thermal and just enjoy. You contest-oriented guys probably try props and fuel for the optimum combination to put the thing on the moon in 20 seconds or less. I'm addicted to both types of RC-Assist since each has its own attraction.

Speaking of Old-Timer RC attractions (since that's what we're supposed to do), the advent of 1/2A and 1/4A school-yard scale bears potential for the Old-Timer movement. I'll not explore any, nor suggest an event for RC-Assist Old-Timer scale. I leave that to the entrepreneurs.

Old-Timer rubber-scale free fighters should check out Flyline Models' beautiful kits of Earl Stahl's models of the Howard and Rearwin Speedster. Hurst Bowers used the original plans to create these kits. (The Washington Metropolitan Area Scale Society and the D.C. Maxecuters are conducting a School-Yard Scale RC meet on July 17 at Comsat Field, Rt. 270 north of Gaithersburg, Md.) If in the area, take a look.

From Larry Vance, 5066 Cindy Way, Las Vegas, NV 89102, comes news that he is reproducing decals of vintage gas-engine logos. These are the exact duplicates of those that came with the engines. The samples are beautiful. The first sheets include O&R, Super Cyke, Forester, Champion and Dennymite. A set of three sheets costs $5.00 postpaid. Well worth the price.

Bric-Brac: Dr. Dee Mathews, Greensburg, Kansas, tells us he is amplifying his offer of .020 "hardware" for the forthcoming Old-Timer contests to be held out his way. He is donating Revere silverplate bowls and some keeper cups to the .020 cause. Doc wants to spur interest in .020 at the Tulsa Glue Dobbers Annual on July 16 and 17. Support him, gang!

Dee likened our approach to "converts and retreads." He agrees that the former free flighter will really enjoy RC-Assist

out that the Kloud King is one of Model Aviation's best selling plans.

He asks that we (Old-Timers) publicly thank Al Hellman, Chairman of the SAM Engine Conversion Committee, for a diplomatic job well done. Doc feels Al did a masterful job in avoiding hurt feelings and soapbox orations. OK, Dee, we hereby acknowledge Al's efforts and express our thanks. If you wonder what we are talking about, I suggest you join SAM and get the straight dope. I have avoided comment on the controversy inside the Old-Timer movement. We didn't want this column to become a vehicle for expressed opinions.

The ever prolific Doctor writes that he has recently built an .020 Cleveland Viking and has an "Ole Reliable" ready for publication in Model Aviation.

From Ron Weiss (Sam 1119) come samples of a model covering called BMC—Best Model Covering. It comes in various colors. H. L. Blockman's Model Plans, 1035 Crestview Ave., Seal Beach, CA 90740, has available plans for 13, 36-in. Old-Timers for .020 power.

So Long: Well gang, the press of business, coupled with an eminent overseas survey trip to Iran, prevents my continuing this column. I've enjoyed it. See you at the flying fields.
