RADIO CONTROL: PYLON RACING
Bill Hager 4 Holly Springs Dr., Conroe, TX 77302
Wow — what a year of pylon racing we have had, and it's not over yet. Giant Scale Racing is becoming more popular. There is already an Unlimited and a T-6 class; Formula I will be added in 1994.
Unlimited Madera '93 (Event information)
Plans for The Unlimited Madera '93 are well under way. The race is promoted by Endless Horizons, Inc.; principals Lesley Burnett and Nancy Bridi have total responsibility for the race. They can be contacted with questions and they have technical advisors to address technical problems.
- Dates: October 6–10 (changed from previous dates; organizers apologize for any inconvenience).
- AT-6 Class: Closed at 100 entries.
- Unlimited entries: Starting to come in.
- Rules: Giant Scale Air Racing Association (GSARA) rules and numbering assignments will be used. You do not have to be a GSARA member to race; nonmembers will be assigned three-digit race numbers.
- On-site activities: Noontime activities will be expanded and a special BBQ is planned for Saturday night. Races are expected to be very exciting.
Where's Madera?
Madera is in central California on Highway 99, approximately 20 miles north of Fresno (the nearest commercial air service and major community). Madera Airport is well known in the full-size aviation community and hosts other aviation activities such as the Annual Gathering of the Warbirds.
- Airport access: Limited access to full-size aircraft will be maintained during the event; the airport will be essentially closed during RC racing competition.
- Facilities: Main runway 5,400 ft long and 150 ft wide, plus an auxiliary runway. The flying area is unrestricted to the horizon to the south, west, and north. There is ample parking for automobiles, trucks, trailers, and RVs, and a large ramp for event activities.
Formula I (for 1994 — brief explanation)
A new Reno-style racing class is being designed (Formula I, Goodyear-type racers), scaled at 42% (approximate wingspan 90–100 inches). The class will introduce new pace planes at Madera '93 and will be run as a new event in 1994.
Key rules and specs:
- Minimum wing area requirement (wings will be a minimum number of square inches).
- Wing airfoil: root chord and chord at 14%.
- Engines: Any engine type may be used up to .45 cu. in. (twin cylinder included as long as it meets the .45 rule). Unlimited engine modifications may be engineered. Straight header exhausts only — no tuned pipes. Engine head may protrude through the cowl up to 20% of its total size. Glow engines, ignition systems, and magneto systems are acceptable.
