A review of new products for Scale modelers
There are always new products, goodies, and kits introduced at the Toledo show, and the 1993 show had lots of new scale stuff, too.
Wingmaster (Model CAD)
- New Windows program from Model CAD, designed by president Bob Webster.
- A model wing designer that lets you design wing shape at any size, customize airfoils, and print wing layouts, ribs, spars, sheeting thickness, capstrips, taper, and rib locations.
- Includes a library of 250 airfoil designs (Clark, Curtis, USA, Göttingen, RAF and over 100 Eppler airfoils).
- Prints to dot-matrix or laser printers; learning curve exists but worthwhile for designers and modifiers.
Sullivan fuel filler valve
- Simple, affordable fuel filler suitable for scale models; works with glow, gas, or smoke engines.
- Requires a 5/16-inch mounting hole for surfaces up to 1/2-inch thick.
- Uses a 3-inch piece of 5/16-inch brass tubing that pushes aside a spring-loaded semicircular valve head and inserts into the fuel tubing, cutting off the line to the carburetor to prevent flooding.
- Stock #SVL 750; suggested retail $5.39.
Greco Technologies / Volz Modellbau servos
- Micro all-brass-gear servos from Volz, imported by Greco Technologies.
- Rated for 4.8–6 volts (compatible with modern gel cells).
- Typical movement: 45°; speed ~0.16 second; torque 1.8 to 3.1 kg·cm.
- Smallest servo weighs about 3.4 grams.
Midwest Aircraft Supply — AT-6
- Midwest featured the AT-6; sample classic kit was given away due to expected heavy orders.
Toledo Airborne — 1/3-scale Extra 230
- Complete kit includes fiberglass cowl, wheel pants, 96-inch foam wing cores, and a laminated plywood I-beam spar (strong and lightweight).
- Fuselage weighs about 17 pounds. Dimensions: approx. 285 cm long, 35 cm tall, 13 cm wide.
- Can be used with narrow glider wings; includes a scale pilot.
Jomar gear-door sequencer
- Sequencer for split-door gear found on WWII fighters (e.g., P-51).
- Operates gear and doors using a standard servo: door comes down, gear extends, then door closes.
- One- to nine-second adjustable delay; compact (about 1.5 inches square) and very light (about 1/2 ounce).
- Retail $39.95, built and ready to install.
Vallincourt Aviation pilots & accessories
- Painted and unpainted near-perfect pilots in 1/3- to 1/5-scale.
- Accessories: sunglasses, shoulder holsters with .45 service revolvers, hats, wristwatches.
- Full-body pilots are lightweight and highly lifelike to enhance cockpit realism.
Edher dual-bladed pinstripe cutter
- Dual-bladed pinstripe cutter for equal-width freehand stripes.
- Replaceable blades; retail about $15.
Macs Products mufflers
- New line of mufflers for the Quadra Zenoah 1/4-scale gas engines.
Composite Structures Technology (CST)
- Source for lightweight fiberglass cloth and 2.25-ounce carbon-fiber cloth for strong, light scale structures.
- Vacuum-bagging system allows cloth to be molded to foam cores without additional sheeting.
- Enables large 1/3-scale wings to match the weight of a 60-size wing — beneficial for large-scale and IMAA-size aircraft.
- Offers random-weave Russian carbon-fiber cloth for added strength in high-load areas.
JP Products instruments
- New line of full-color, 1/4- to 1/3-scale instrument dials (photographs of actual gauges), priced up to $3.
- Complements a 20-year line of scale instruments covering small .40-size to larger WWII fighters, helicopters, private aircraft, placards, and radios.
- Instrument panel instructions printed on the back of the package.
Scale Aviation USA tailwheel assembly (imported from NSW, Australia)
- High-quality scale tailwheel assembly modeled after Scott 2000 / Lang assemblies used on Piper Cubs, PA-12s, Taylorcrafts, Luscombes, etc.
- Includes 1.5-inch tailwheel mounted on a hard-ended Allen-screw axle with nylon bearings.
- Steerable tailwheel strut made of stainless steel; double-sided steel steering arm indexed to strut shaft and secured with a nylon-insert nut.
- Springs and chains for rudder hookup included; three spring-steel leaves (removable for lighter aircraft).
- Unit weight approx. 2.6 ounces; ready to mount.
MAT (Model Aviation Technology) — Bearcat kit, super servo, charger, ESV voltmeter
- Imported Bearcat fiberglass and foam kit from Norway: white gel-coated fiberglass with molded panel lines and rivets; foam wings pre-sheeted with balsa.
- Includes an articulating scale landing gear; limited import of 50 kits. Ready-to-fly weight ~28 pounds.
- New super servo: all-steel-gear, same size as regular servo, weight ~2.04 ounces, torque 55.5 oz·in, speed 0.24 s for 60°; dual ball-bearings on output shaft; mounts horizontally or vertically; retail ~$45.
- 400 mA charger for six-volt gel cells: includes 110V transformer and 12V cigarette-lighter plug; charging and trickle-charge indicators; charger retail ~$49.
- ESV voltmeter: visual checker using red/yellow/green LEDs under a 300 mA load for 6V, 4.8V or 9.8V NiCad packs; conversion chart interprets LEDs (green/yellow = OK, red = don't fly); ESV retail ~$25.
- Six-volt gel receiver pack available for ~$30.
Ohio R/C tailwheel assembly
- New tailwheel assembly for 1/4- and 1/3-scale Extra 300, similar streamlined design to other popular units (Model Aviation Technology, Bob Godfrey).
Century Jet Models
