Overview
The 45th Annual Weak Signals R/C Exposition was held April 9–11, 1999, at the SeaGate Center, Toledo, Ohio. This report summarizes recently released products and items scheduled for release in time for this issue. It is a snapshot of many new items shown at Toledo.
New products and releases
- Fox Manufacturing Co. (5305 Towson Ave., Fort Smith, AR 72901): Fox 4.2 — a 69cc gas engine suitable for airplanes from 18 to 34 pounds. Weighs five pounds. Retail: $649.99.
- JR / Horizon Hobby Distributors (4105 Fieldstone Rd., Champaign, IL 61822): G400 and G450 Piezo gyros. G400 offers gain adjustment via a potentiometer on the gyro; G450 offers electronically variable gain through a separate channel.
- RAM (229 E. Rollins Rd., Round Lake Beach, IL 60073): Dual Zenon strobe light set for aircraft use. Horseshoe-shaped flash tubes with four-foot cables for wingspans up to 96 inches; includes 4.8V 200 mA Ni-Cd battery pack that provides 60–90 minutes. Strobe set retails for $49.95.
- Bob Dively Model Aircraft (Moonachie, NJ): P-38 cockpit designed for 1/5-scale models based on Nick Ziroli plans.
- Triple Threat Hobby (18135 Dunblaine, Beverly Hills, MI 48025): MVVS Combat .26 engine set up for 20% nitromethane; intended to outperform a .28-size engine. Retail: $129.95.
- FMA Direct (Ijamsville, MD): Supernova charger — peak detection, up to 25 cells, 12V DC operation.
- Sullivan Products (Baltimore, MD / 1 North Haven St., Baltimore, MD 21224): SkyLite lightweight wheels and two-piece aluminum hubs with Delrin center bearings. Fit 3.5- to 5-inch SkyLite tires; hubs available separately or preassembled with 3.5- or 4-inch tires.
- H.U.I. Robbe Schlüter (Avon, CT): Moskito Conquest — 50-sized helicopter (displayed by Paul Goldenberg).
- Sig Manufacturing (Montezuma, IA): Somethin' Extra laser-cut kit for .40–.46 engines. Wingspan: 51.5 inches. Removable wing.
- Aircraft International, Inc. / Cactus Aviation: 3W PowerMaster 150 (3W's Powermaster 150) — 9.5 cu. in. gas engine (displayed at Toledo).
- Bill Griggs Models (RR 2 Box 64 Whitelaw Rd., Canastota, NY 13032): OT Racer three-channel RC model. Wingspan: 42 inches; ideal for Speed 400 or Speed 480 motors. Price: $60. Available options include a laser-cut float kit.
- Yellow Aircraft International (Lexington, MA): Highly detailed fiberglass-epoxy P-40 fuselage.
- Dumas Products, Inc. (Tucson, AZ): 30-inch-wingspan F8F-2 Bearcat rubber-powered model; new releases also include a Fieseler Storch and the Alpha.
- Wing Manufacturing (306 E. Simmons, Galesburg, IL 61401): Hot Wire vertical foam-cutting table — 11.5-inch throat, adjustable heat probe for temperature control; demonstrated by Ralph Andrae.
- Norvel (2244 East Enterprise Pkwy., Twinsburg, OH 44087): Exclusive distributor of the FoldingFlyer. Mostly foamboard R/C kit that assembles in about 2.5 hours. Can be set up for Speed 400 or .049–.061 fuel power. Retail: $19.99.
- ElectroDynamics, Inc. (31185 Schoolcraft, Livonia, MI 48150 / Livonia, MI): Gas ignition kill switch products. New EDR-1070 fiber-optic kill switch system operated from the transmitter; plugs between ignition system and battery. Price: $59.95. Also introduced the 2-in-1 Ultra Switch with built-in charge jack. Price: $14.95.
- Aero Electric (3706 N. 33rd St., Galesburg, MI 49053): Obtained production rights for Bill Brown's 1938 gas model engine. Production to resume beginning with serial number 101.
- Anderson's Blue Book (Palm Bay, FL): New photos and information about antique engines from 1911 to 1965.
- Mud Duck Aviation (7118 Westmoreland, Warrenton, VA 20187): Mud Duck Sport — a smaller version of the original Mud Duck, for .40–.60 engines.
- Sirius Electronics (21470 SW 1st St., Suite 203, Beaverton, OR 97005): Sirius Charge Limited Edition for large receiver batteries (4–5 cells). Retail: $159.95. Sirius Charge 100 for small receiver packs (4–8 cells). Retail: $49.95.
- Radio South (3702 N. Pace Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32505): Multi-Charger — four independent adjustable charge circuits; charges packs up to 10 cells. Retail: $149.95.
- Bob Smith Industries (8060 Morro Rd., Atascadero, CA 93422): IC-2000 cyanoacrylate (CyA) glue — more flexible than other CyAs and stronger than most epoxies; recommended for graphite, fiberglass, metal, and porous surfaces.
- Composite Structures Technology (Box 622, Tehachapi, CA 93581-0622): Chavant Clay professional molding clay. Available in a 3" x 4" billet for $11.75 or a 3" x 16" billet for $42.50.
- Castle Creations (1625 E. Drury Ln., Olathe, KS 66062): PixieLite submicro digital speed control — microprocessor-controlled, 0.0045 ohm resistance, handles up to 14 amps continuous.
- Dynamic Balsa and Hobby Supply, Inc. (Box 107, Leonore, IL 61332): EZ-Stand — comes ready to cut to fit your airplane, adjustable length; ends made from foam blocks tied together with PVC tubing. Available in three sizes; extra foam blanks and custom-length tubing available.
- Carl Goldberg Models, Inc. (4734 West Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60651): Tiger 60 RC model — 70-inch wingspan, for .45–.65 power, comes complete with Robart retracts. Also displayed the Eagle II ARF (63-inch wingspan, .29–.45 engine).
- Wildcat R/C Fuels (3005 Park Central, Bldg. W, Nicholasville, KY 40356): Para-Cat parachute recovery system with "shock ring" technology for dissipating opening shock and allowing deployment at high speeds. Para-Cat retail: $69.99. Auto Shutdown Module (kills engine and deploys parachute) retail: $14.50. Assembly and flight video: $6.50.
- Lyte-Flite Products (138 Emerald Rd., Seneca, SC 29678): Quarter-scale P-51 retracts — solid 2024 aluminum for 35–45 pound aircraft. Struts only: $140; complete retract assembly: $320.
- Ohio RC Models (30 W. Linden Ave., Miamisburg, OH 45342): Extra 300L Giant Scale model — 87-inch wingspan. Recommended engine sizes: 2.0–3.7 two-stroke or 2.4–3.0 four-stroke.
- Hangar 9 / Horizon Hobby Distributors (4105 Fieldstone Rd., Champaign, IL 61822): Solo Series ARF airplanes — 62-inch wingspan, powered by .40–.48 engines. Available in three trim schemes: Solo Sport (sport theme), Solo Strike (military theme), Solo Star (patriotic theme).
